Chapter 9: The Piggyback

The group enact their plan: Max, Lucas and Erica go to the Creel house; Steve, Nancy, and Robin to its Upside Down counterpart to attack Vecna; and Dustin and Eddie divert the bats. Eddie sacrifices himself to keep the bats away. Eleven, Mike, Will, Jonathan, and Argyle create an isolation tank through which Eleven enters Max's mind to fight Vecna. However, Vecna overwhelms her and possesses Max; he reveals to Eleven that he has controlled the Upside Down and acted as its "hive mind" ever since she sent him there. Mike professes his love to Eleven, giving her the strength to escape Vecna and break his control over Max before he can land the killing blow, but Max dies from her injuries. Hopper, Joyce, and Murray reenter the prison and kill the Demogorgons, further weakening Vecna. Steve, Nancy, and Robin set Vecna's physical form ablaze and shoot him, apparently killing him. Eleven uses her powers to resurrect Max, but the latter's brief death allowed Vecna's gates to open, spreading throughout Hawkins. Two days later, the town is recovering from an "earthquake". Everyone reunites, while Max remains comatose. Will senses Vecna is still alive, and the Upside Down begins to infiltrate the town.
